Daniel Carr scored a career-high 18 points, and
Shaun Willett notched a double-double for the second consecutive game, but the seventh-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (1-1) fell to Northern State University (1-1), 87-74, on Sunday night at the St. Joseph Civic Arena in the final game of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. Both Carr and Willett were named to the all-tournament team for their performances.
Queens started strong, taking a nine-point lead just over five minutes in when
Blake Morrow scored on a layup to give the Royals a 12-3 lead. Northern State answered and took the lead, 19-18, on a Parker Fox lay-in with 8:11 remaining in the half and led the rest of the game. Fox finished with 11 points and was one of six Wolves in double figures. Ian Smith led with 14 points while Justin Decker and Gabe King each scored 13 points. Cole Dahl scored 12 points on 4-for-7 3-point shooting, and Andrew Kallman scored 11 points.
Out of the locker room, Queens used a 16-6 run to cut the deficit to two, 51-49, but Northern State later stretched the lead to 20, 85-65, with 2:03 remaining. The Wolves outrebounded the Royals 41-33, shot 11 of 26 (42.3%) from the 3-point line and 22-for-28 (78.6%) from the free throw line to help stretch the lead.
Willett led Queens with 19 points, tying a career high, and 13 rebounds to post the fifth double-double of his career.
Lewis Diankulu scored 14 points while securing seven rebounds.
Van Turner Jr. added 11 points on 3-for-6 from 3-point range.
Sunday night's setback is the earliest Queens has lost a game in a season since dropping the opening game of the 2014-2015 season to Georgia College on Nov. 14, 2014.
Queens returns to action on Friday night, Nov. 9, versus Emmanuel College at Shuford Gymnasium on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the Queens Sports Network.
