Post-match Interview with Hannah Long
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team ended its regular season in exciting fashion on Saturday, picking up a 3-2 (25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-11) over Anderson University inside Curry Arena.
Queens moved its record to 14-14 overall and 10-10 in South Atlantic Conference play after totaling 149 digs on defense and nine service aces. Anderson, which ranked second in the league standings coming into the weekend, fell to 26-4 with a 17-3 conference record.
Defense was on display all afternoon for the Royals as five different players had double-digit dig totals, including four players with more than 20 digs. Sophomore libero
JayCee Jones led the way with a career-high 40 digs, the second highest dig total for a Queens player in program history.
The Royals began the match with an eight-point victory in the first set, holding the Anderson attack to a .056 hitting park. The Trojans turned the tide in sets two and three, winning both sets to take a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Anderson held an early two-point lead before Queens scored seven unanswered points to build a 10-5 lead. The Royals never trailed again en route to forcing a deciding fifth set.
The fifth set provided fans with more back-and-forth play as the two sides played to five total ties and two lead changes. The Trojans once again held an early lead until back-to-back kills from sophomore
Logan Witt gave Queens an 8-7 lead.
Junior
Mallory Swarts followed with a kill of her own to put Queens in front for good as consecutive kills from Witt and freshman
Lindsay Elmore and an Anderson attack error help put the match away.
Swarts turned in her best performance of the season after finishing with 53 assist, 21 digs and four service aces. Sophomore
Chanel Turner led all players with 20 kills and chipped in 24 digs, while Witt followed with 16 kills and a .333 hitting percentage to go along with three total blocks.
Another sophomore,
Jordan Proszenyak, registered 15 kills and 34 digs for the Royals and Elmore contributed a career-high nine kills, nine digs and five total blocks. Redshirt-freshman
Alexandria Becerra was the final Royal to finish with double-digits kills, totaling 14 digs on defense.
Queens, the No. 6 seed in next week's SAC Women's Volleyball Championship, will travel to third-seeded Lincoln Memorial University on Tuesday, Nov. 6, to open postseason play.
