CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Van Turner Jr. scored a career-high 21 points, but the 10
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (5-2) fell to Belmont Abbey College (5-1), 76-55, on Saturday afternoon at the Levine Center. Turner scored all of his points from behind the 3-point line, shooting 7-for-12 from distance.
Shaun Willett followed with 16 points, while
Lewis Diankulu secured eight rebounds.
Queens trailed by seven points early, 9-2, when three-straight 3-pointers from Turner, Willett, and Turner again, capped a 13-5 run that gave the Royals their first lead, 15-14. Turner opened 5-for-5 from beyond the arc before missing a shot.
After trading the lead multiple times late in the first half, Belmont Abbey ended the half on an 8-1 run to take a 35-31 edge into the locker room.
With 13:05 to go, the Crusaders stretched the lead to double figures for the first time, as DeQuan Abrom hit four consecutive free throws, giving BAC an 11-point lead, 53-42. Queens answered with a 6-0 run that cut the deficit to four, 55-51, but the Royals never led in the second half.
Belmont Abbey closed the game on a 21-4 run to seal the victory.
Abrom led four Crusaders in double figures with 18 points. BAC shot 49.1 percent from the field and held Queens to 36.7-percent shooting. The Crusaders generated 25 points of off 21 turnovers by the Royals and outrebounded Queens 33-31.
Queens returns to action on Wednesday evening, Nov. 28, on the road versus Lenoir-Rhyne University. Opening tipoff at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory, North Carolina, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage will be available on the
