CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Daniel Carr scored a career-high 27 points to bolster a 27-3 second-half run as the seventh-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (4-1) defeated the University of West Georgia (1-2), 90-73, on Wednesday night at the Levine Center in the season's home opener. Carr led three Royals in double figures while shooting eight of 14 from the field and nine of 10 at the free throw line.
The Royals carried a three-point lead into halftime, 42-39, and trailed 47-46 with 14:29 remaining, before a layup from
Armoni Lee opened the game-defining run. Carr followed with a lay-in to give Queens a three-point lead, 50-47.
Shaun Willett and
Van Turner Jr. combined to score the next 12 points, capping a 16-1 run that gave the Royals a 62-48 advantage with 11:14 to play. Willett recorded his fourth double-double in five games, and the seventh of his career while tying a career high with 22 points and securing 14 rebounds. Turner netted a career-high 20 points on 6-for-9 3-point shooting.
Queens took its largest lead of 25 points with 7:06 left when Carr's layup made it 77-52. The junior point guard also tied a career best with seven rebounds.
The Royals held the Wolves to 22.2-percent 3-point shooting and forced 22 turnovers that generated 30 points off of turnovers. Queens shot 49.2 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point line.
