Smith Scores in OT to Lift Royals Past Newberry

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team closed its regular season this afternoon winning 3-2 over Newberry College. Senior forward Renee Smith scored the game-winner in the 80th minute of action on an assist from Jocelyn Lawrence. With the win, Queens improves to 8-9 on the year and 6-4 in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas play. The Wolves complete their season at 8-10 and 3-9.
 
Newberry got on the board first today scoring a goal in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 lead that they would hold well into the second half.
 
The Royals would see their first goal of the day in the 52nd minute when Mazvita Mtisi found the back of the cage after receiving the ball from Millie Eaton-Jones. The game remained tied at 1-1 until Newberry's Chantel Gauthier scored the Wolves' second of the day in the 63rd. Mette Beekman of Queens then knotted the game at 2-2 with a goal in the 67th to force overtime.
 
Mtisi finished play with three points after totaling one goal and one assist in today's game. She also led the Royals with five shots while Beekman followed with two shots. In goal, Jet van den Berg totaled seven saves to collect her sixth win of the season.
 
Newberry edged the Royals in shots 11-10, putting nine shots on goal to Queens' seven shots on goal. Both teams earned eight penalty corners with the Royals scoring off of their last of the game to seal the win.
 
With today's victory, Queens finishes the regular season tied with Belmont Abbey for the second place spot in the league after both teams posted 6-4 records. The Crusaders will be the No. 2 seed heading into the inaugural South Atlantic Conference Championships because of their sweep of Coker during the regular season. Queens will be the No. 3 seed.
 
Semifinals will take place at Limestone College on Friday, November 16 and the championship match will be played on Sunday, November 18.
