ANDERSON, S.C. – Facing its sixth road match in its last seven contests, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (5-4; 1-3) took Anderson University (4-4; 4-0) to overtime today at Trojan Stadium, but a second-chance opportunity in the 100th minute for the Trojans ultimately found the back of the net as the Royals came up short, 2-1.
In a match that saw a combined 35 shots, including 19 from Anderson and 16 from Queens, the Royals struck first off the foot of sophomore
Lulu Phan. Her sixth goal of the season, Phan now leads the team in goals scored and now has found the back of the net in five of nine games. She has three goals in the past two games.
Queens held a 1-0 lead late in the second half before Anderson scored in the 71st minute, which would eventually force overtime. At 99:58, the Trojans took advantage of a second-chance opportunity after a shot hit the cross bar and deflected in front of the net for the winning goal.
Rachel Quest, the Royals' senior goalkeeper, recorded a season-high nine saves. The Trojans put 11 shots on goal to the Royals' five.
Phan led Queens with five shots, followed by freshman
Dani Diaz with four, three of which went on goal. Senior
Charlotte Ring recorded three shots and one on goal.
The Royals face one last home game at Lenoir-Rhyne University before coming back home for four-straight matches on their home turf. Queens will face Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 5:00 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
