Late Goal Takes Down Royals in Season’s Final Home Match

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (7-6-1; 3-5-1 SAC) held the high-powered offense of Lincoln Memorial (10-4; 6-3 SAC) scoreless for almost 90 minutes on Wednesday. In the end, a late-game score in the 88th minute of play led the Railsplitters to a win over the Royals, 1-0, from Dickson Field.

Senior goalie Rachel Quest was the star of the match for the Royals, as she made three diving saves to preserve a scoreless tie into the 88th minute. She faced 16 shots on the night, including five from Jessica Cravero, the South Atlantic Conference leader in goals scored, en route to finishing with five saves.

Quest's five saves ranks third-most of her season in goal and it marks the fifth time through 14 games that she recorded five or more saves in a single game.

Led by Charlotte Ring with five and Lulu Phan with three, the Royals shot 10 times, three of which went on goal. Phan put two of those on goal, while Ring tallied the third. Taylor Hunkele also finished with two shots.

After Lincoln Memorial controlled the ball for much of the first half, the Royals responded in the second half by going toe-to-toe with the Railsplitters and creating several of their best scoring opportunities. Despite edging Lincoln Memorial in corners, 5-4, Queens was unable to slip one past Lincoln Memorial goalkeeper Ann-Marie O'Connell

The Royals played most of the match without its team-leader in points, Dani Diaz, who entered in the game's late stages.

After finishing up its home schedule, Queens will head to Mars Hill for a crucial conference match to end the regular season. That game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
