CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Knotted up at one-goal apiece and overtime nearing, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team struck with a game-winning goal in the 85th minute (7-5-1; 3-4-1 SAC) to surge past Newberry College (6-7-1; 1-6-1) in a crucial match in the South Atlantic Conference from Dickson Field.
Junior
Leanne Bryant came streaking through the box and redirected a pass from teammate
Charlotte Ring into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal, her first score of the season and third of her career.
Ring, a senior, was credited with the winning assist on Senior Day, tying her for the team-lead in points scored this season with 15.
The Royals dominated the ball and possession throughout the match, finishing with a wide 20-shot advantage over the Wolves. While Queens managed 22 shots, the stiff back line of the Royals limited the Wolves to only two shots throughout 90 minutes of play.
Freshman
Summer Bishop scored her first goal of her career for Queens in the 11:59 into the first half to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead. Bishop took a pass from
Emma Rose Stockton and lofted a shot into the upper-90 from just outside the 18. For Stockton, the assist goes down as her third of the season, tying a team-high.
Newberry's Ragan Hill then answered with a goal of her own in the 25th minute before the game went scoreless for 60 minutes of game play later when Ring found Bryant.
Ring and Stockton led the Royals with four shots, while
Dani Diaz,
Lulu Phan and Bryant each had three.
The Royals will play their fourth-straight match at Dickson Field and last home match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 5:00 p.m. against Lincoln Memorial.
