CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a rematch of a contest played in late-September, the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19,25-15) win over the Lions of Mars Hill University inside Curry Arena to split the regular season series. Mars Hill had a 3-1 win on its home floor last month.
Queens (12-11, 8-8 SAC) hit over .200 as a team for the sixth time this season, including a .268 mark in the third and final set to seal the win. Mars Hill (14-8, 8-6 SAC) suffered its third straight loss after struggling on offense for much of the night. The Royals also tallied eight service aces, including two apiece from junior
Mallory Swarts and sophomore
Chanel Turner.
The first set of play was the closest of the evening as Mars Hill opened with three consecutive points before Queens tied the set at 3-3 following two MHU ballhandling errors and a
Casey Tarvin kill. The lead changed hands three times in the frame with the final occurrence coming at 21-20 as the Royals closed out the set.
Three more lead changes occurred early on in the second set, but Queens was able to pull away and take the set with back-to-back kills from Turner and fellow sophomore
Logan Witt. The Royals held Mars Hill to a -.024 hitting percentage in the third set and led from start to finish en route to the victory.
Tarvin led all players with 13 kills and had 19 digs on defense, while Witt chipped in 11 kills without an error and a .379 hitting percentage. Turner followed with 10 kills and a .219 hitting mark of her own as well as 14 digs.
Swarts had another double-double, totaling 35 assists and 15 digs, while sophomore
JayCee Jones had a team-high 21digs from the back row. Freshman
Lindsay Elmore was active at the net, registering three total blocks for the second consecutive match.
The Royals remain in the Queen City for a match against Lenoir-Rhyne University tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Bears claimed a 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 11-25, 15-13) conference win on Sept. 22 in Hickory, N.C.
