CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season the women's volleyball teams of Queens University of Charlotte and Lenoir-Rhyne University went five sets with the Bears coming out on top 3-2 (27-25, 17-25, 20-25, 28-26, 15-10) inside Curry Arena.
Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 16-7 overall with a 10-6 South Atlantic Conference record, while Queens fell to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in league play.
After the Bears won the first set, Queens responded with a .324 hitting performance in the second set to claim an eight-point win and even the match.
Queens won the third set 25-20 to go ahead 2-1 in the match with a chance to close it out in four. The Royals opened the set with an 8-3 run to force a Lenoir-Rhyne timeout and put the Bears on their heels.
However, Lenoir-Rhyne battled back as the lead changed hands six times over the course of the fourth set with LR outlasting Queens for a 28-26 win to force a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth, the Bears hit .360 as a team and held the Royals to a .053 hitting mark to come away with the road victory.
Sophomore
Casey Tarvin tied a program record and led all players with 25 kills to go along with 26 digs for Queens, while fellow sophomore
Jordan Proszenyak followed with 15 kills and 24 digs of her own.
Another sophomore,
Chanel Turner, had 12 kills, 21 digs and three total blocks as junior
Mallory Swarts finished with 54 assist and 21 digs.
Queens has a week away from the court before returning to competition on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Jefferson City, Tenn. against Carson-Newman University.
