Royals Claw from Behind, Force 1-1 Tie in Double Overtime against Bulldogs

Post-match Interview with Denise Brolly
Highlights

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Facing off with a conference rival, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (6-5-1; 2-4-1 SAC) battled back from a one-goal deficit against Wingate University (6-5-2; 3-4-1 SAC) to tie the Bulldogs in double-overtime, 1-1, from Dickson Field.

Despite dominating the ball, and the shot count, for nearly the entirety of the match, the Royals found themselves trailing by one goal 80 minutes into the conference clash with the Bulldogs.

But as time ticked down towards 10 minutes remaining, the Bulldogs thwarted the Royals' offensive attack with a foul inside the box. Up stepped senior captain Charlotte Ring for Queens, who buried the penalty kick in the left side of the net for the tying score.

Despite five shots apiece combined in the two overtime periods, the score remained knotted at one-all, with both teams exiting the field having earned one point in the league standings.

The Royals doubled the Bulldogs in shots, outshooting them 24-12 and 10-5 on shots on goal. Queens' goalie Rachel Quest, who went nearly untested through the first two periods plus the first overtime period, finished with four total saves and three huge saves in double overtime, including a sprawling, game-saving effort to deflect a would-be goal off the tip of her fingers, sending it inches wide of the net.

Ring, who scored the lone goal for the Royals, finished with a team-high seven shots and four on goal. Dani Diaz followed with 5 shots and two on goal, many of which came from long strikes outside the box that nearly found their way into the back of the net. Lulu Phan and Emma Rose Stockton both had four shots.

Ring's goal was her sixth of the season, tying her for second on the team with Diaz and one behind Phan, the team-leader with seven. Ring has now converted on all three of her penalty kick opportunities this season.

With momentum on their side, the Royals will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, once again at home against Newberry. That match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff as Queens celebrates Senior Day.
