CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's rugby team travelled to South Carolina Saturday afternoon to battle the College of Charleston Cougars coming out on top, 41-31.
Asiah Peterson led the Royals with three tries, along with teammates
Abby Tobias and
Ella Brucker who scored two tries each.
Hannah Struzyk kicked three successful conversions in the win, and
Tori Wilson also added a try to the board.
The Cougars were the first to put points on the board with two tries and two conversions to move ahead on the Royals 14-0. It was Tobias who scored first for the Royals with a try followed by a conversion from Struzyk to cut the Cougars' lead in half, 14-7. Tobias would score her second try to make the score 14-12 with 20 minutes left in the first half.
The College of Charleston answered back with another try to take a 19-12 lead, but Queens' Peterson quieted the Cougars with a try of her own followed by another conversion from Struzyk to tie things up at 19-19. With just four minutes left in the first half, the Cougars added another try to the board to move in front heading into the locker room, 24-19.
Brucker would score a try for the Royals to start the second half followed by a third conversion from Struzyk to put the Royals on top, 26-24. Queens never looked back as they went on a 15-0 run on the Cougars with tries from Peterson, Brucker, and Wilson. The Cougars would not score again until the final minutes of the half, but by that time Queens had already solidified the win.
The squad travels to Wilmington, N.C., next to take on the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Saturday, February 3. Play is slated for 3 p.m.
