CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second straight outing, the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team was unable to hold onto an early lead as the Royals fell 79-62 to Anderson University (S.C.) on Saturday afternoon inside the Levine Center.
Anderson (13-7, 7-5 SAC) shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the contest and held a decisive 46-27 edge in total rebounds. Queens (4-15, 1-12 SAC) was able to force 17 Trojan turnovers and score 19 points, but were outscored in the paint by a 13-point margin.
Queens jumped out to an early lead, shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter as junior
Lade Adepoju's 11 first quarter points helped the Royals to a 20-16 advantage.
However, the Trojans outrebounded Queens 13-6 in the second quarter, including seven offensive boards, leading to a 39-36 halftime edge. The first half of play featured 10 lead changes, while Queens forced Anderson into 11 turnovers and scored 13 points off of those miscues.
In the second half, Anderson turned the ball over just six times and shot 51.6 percent from the floor en route to the victory. The Royals struggled offensively, making just 25.9 percent of their shots and committing 14 turnovers.
Anderson's Alexis Dillard led the Trojans with 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, while teammate Erika Martin also had 15 points to lead four Trojans in double figures.
Adepoju made 9-of-14 attempts from the floor and 5-of-7 shot from the charity stripe to register a game-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds. Senior
Mendy McNeese was the only other Royal in double figures, scoring 13 points and pulling down seven rebounds.
Freshmen
Kristian Eanes and
Caitlyn Moore each chipped in nine points on offense, while Eanes tallied four steals on the defensive end of the floor.
Queens remains at home for its next contest as they host Coker College on Wednesday, January 31 at 6 p.m. in Curry Arena.
