CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's rugby teams opened their inaugural seasons over the weekend with a pair of wins. The men defeated Furman's B squad by a score of 63-13 while the women defeated Elon, 94-0.
"Today's win is a major milestone we have been looking forward to since day one of announcing our new rugby program," Wurst commented. "Making history within Queens Athletics is a privilege our student-athletes have worked hard to be a part of, and we are certainly looking forward to the next contest."
Maddy D'Oliveira led the women in tries with three for 15 points while
Bridget Mielke totaled 22 points on two tries and six conversions.
Asiah Peterson, McKayla Tatum,
Abby Tobias, and
Ella Brucker each recorded two tries, and
Tori Wilson and
Abby Berberich notched one try apiece.
Hannah Struzyk added one try and one conversion for seven points.
Brucker goes on record for scoring the Royals' first points ever in competition as her try was the first of the game.
On the men's side, the Royals trailed 13-8 at one point before coming back to hold a 26-13 lead at the half.
Both teams will remain on the road for their next matches at South Carolina with the men taking on the B team on Saturday, September 9 at 3 p.m. and the women playing at 11 a.m.
