CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The visiting Trojans of Anderson University (S.C.) came away with a 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23) over Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday in the Levine Center.
The first set of play between the South Atlantic Conference foes saw Anderson (6-3, 1-1) take advantage of four Queens' service errors and a .057 hitting percentage to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
However, the Royals (6-2, 1-1) responded with a .359 hitting percentage in the second set to tie the match at 1-all. After trading points in the early going of the frame, Anderson opened up an 11-7 lead before Queens got the ball back in its possession following an attack error.
Sophomore reserve Mallory Swarts entered the game and led the team to five unanswered points from the service line to give QU a two-point advantage. A 4-0 run by the Royals extended the margin to 17-12 before ending the set on back-to-back kills from freshman Casey Tarvin.
The Trojans led from start to finish in the third set of play regain the match lead and began the fourth set on a 7-3 run. Queens rallied five consecutive points, two kills from senior Rebecca Cochran and another from junior Taylor Henry, to claim an 8-7 lead on the scoreboard.
Queens and Anderson traded points once again until a 4-0 run put the visitors in the lead by a 14-11 score. The Royals were able to get within a point of the Trojans six separate times down the stretch and even tied the score at 21-21 following kills from senior Jessica Raines and freshman Jordan Proszenyak and a Trojans attack error.
AU outscored Queens 4-2 in the closing moments to escape Charlotte with the victory. The Trojans had five players with double-digit digs and committed just two errors at the service line compared to 12 miscues by the Royals.
For the Royals, Cochran was the lone player with double-digit kills, putting down 12 swings and contributing 19 digs on defense. Raines, Tarvin and senior Alex Thompson each recorded eight kills in the match, as Thompson also had five total blocks.
Sophomore libero Lexie Dolecheck tallied a career-high 25 digs from the back row, while senior setter Sydney Kunz finished with 38 assists, 10 digs and five kills.
Queens will travel to defending league champion Wingate University on Tuesday, Sept. 19 in the first five straight road matches against SAC opponents.
