Women’s Volleyball Falls to League-Leading Wingate in Straight Sets

WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team fell on the road to defending South Atlantic Conference Champion and current league leader Wingate University 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17) on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (9-0, 4-0) hit .374 in the match to remain undefeated, while Queens (6-3, 1-2) fell for the second match in a row after hitting just .151 but did hold the advantage in total blocks with a 6-5 edge.

Queens earned the first point of the match after a solo block from Rebecca Cochran negated a Wingate attack, but the host opened an 11-5 midway through the set.

A brief 4-0 run, highlighted by two Cochran kills and a service ace from sophomore Mallory Swarts, closed the gap to three points but Wingate sealed the first-set win on a Queens service error.

The Royals led early once again in the second set, opening with a 5-4 advantage. However, seven unanswered points from Wingate opened a six-point gap that Queens could not overcome. QU had a small lead in the early going of the third and final frame but a 6-0 run by the Bulldogs put the match out of reach.

Junior Taylor Henry led the Queens' attack with eight kills and a .389 hitting percentage, while senior Jessica Raines chipped in six kills and a .313 hitting mark of her own. Fellow senior Alex Thompson was efficient in the match, putting down six of her 10 attempts and collecting four total blocks.

Queens continues SAC play this weekend with consecutive road matches against Mars Hill University and Tusculum College on Friday and Saturday.
