NEWBERRY, S.C. – The eighth-ranked Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team completed their fourth season in a row undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play this afternoon defeating Newberry College, 24-9, on the road. The Royals close the regular season at a 14-3 on the year, while the Wolves fall to 5-12 on the season and 1-7 in the league.
Queens was led by
Sydney Lear who had a career-high six goals in the win.
Alexandra Bruder,
Kelly Dowd,
Shannon Mansberger, and Rachel Perret each recorded hat tricks, while
Abigail Paulus totaled
Hanna Scott each recorded five points.
The Royals jumped on the Wolves early opening the game with a 7-0 run in just the first six minutes of action. Newberry would score their first of the day at 23:25, but three more points from Queens would come quickly has they held a 10-1 lead at the 21-minute mark. Mansberger's goal at 19:04 would put the Royals ahead 12-2 enforcing the running clock rule, and Queens went on to extend their lead to 16, 19-3, by the half.
Queens didn't need much on the offensive end to secure their victory after the very dominant first half of play. However, Lear would go to work in the period scoring four of her six goals in the game during the half.
The Royals outshot Newberry, 43-16, putting 38 shots on goal. The Royals also won the battle for ground balls, 24-11, and the battle at the draw, 20-13.
Chase Brokaw and
Christine Wiese split time in the net to total four saves.
Rachel Dillon led Newberry with six points on five goals and one assist. Helen Kuhn added two goals and an assist. Molly Chester and Brandy Bowman split time in the cage recording 14 saves combined.
Queens will be back in action on Friday, April 28 in South Atlantic Conference Championships being held at the Queens Sports Complex. The Royals will play at 4 p.m.
