Queens Tennis Rolls Past North Carolina A&T on Senior Day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It was memorable Senior Day for the Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's tennis programs as they both scored a 9-0 shutout of North Carolina A&T State University on Wednesday, April 12 at Freedom Park.

In the final home match for Marta Gonzalez, Claire Hamilton, Jacklyn Pfuhl, Jaclyn Rock of the women's program and Sean Harris, Will Roberson and Zach Williams of the men's squad, the Royals had a Senior Day to remember.

"I am so proud of our seniors," said Queens head coach Billy Boykin. "They've meant so much to our program, and it was nice to send them off on a high note in the final home match. They will be missed."

First, for the nationally 50th-ranked women's program (11-3), Queens got only a mild fight in doubles play as the No. 2 team of Hannah Lehfeldt and Claire Hamilton had the closest match at 8-5. The top duo of Carlotta Nassi and Marta Gonzalez cruised by with an 8-0 shutout.

Once in singles the scores got more lopsided as only the first, third and fifth flights were competitive. Nassi won in No. 1 match over Sheyla Ramirez, 6-1, 7-5, Melissa Laing earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Angelica Martinez and Lehfeldt won an 8-5 pro set over Klara Smolikova.

In the Royals men's (13-1) dual match, the three doubles points all came in blowouts as the first and third team won by the finals of 8-1, and the No. 2 team of Agustin Aran Martin and Sebastian Meum rolled by the score of 8-2.

The Queens men then really took their play up another notch in singles action as hardly a game was conceded against the visiting Aggies.

The only competitive match was at the No. 1 contest where Jules Athalis was pushed by NCA&T's Nicolas Arduh. After winning the first set by the score of 6-3, Athalis held on for a narrow 7-6 decision in set No. 2.

The Royals men and women will hit the hardcourts one final time this regular season as they make the trip up the Smoky Mountains to Carson-Newman University. The men will be looking to close out an outright South Atlantic Conference Championship. While the women will look to clamp down the second spot in the SAC Tournament.
