Queens Battles for Win over No. 15 Wingate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (6-3, 4-1 SAC) battled Wingate University (7-3, 3-2 SAC) tonight in another South Atlantic Conference face-off, winning 9-8 and ending a three-game winning streak for the Bulldogs

Justin Swick, Reed Murphy, and Laszlo Henning each scored two goals for the Royals, while Garrett Sadler, Duncan Smith, and Nick Sawyer notched one goal each. Nick Carlson, Jonathan Paige, Smith, and Sadler each totaled one assist.

The Bulldogs put themselves on the board first just under a minute into the game, with a goal from Alex Llerandi. Queens then tied the score with a goal from Murphy with 11:25 on the clock, but Llerandi would come back with another recording his second goal of the night, unassisted, to put Wingate up, 2-1, with 9:02 left on the clock. The Bulldogs then tallied another goal to take a 3-1 lead into the second.

Ryan Ormerod would score for the Bulldogs two minutes into the second to extend Wingate's lead to three, 4-1, but the Royals crawled their way back into the game soon after with an unassisted goal from Murphy which was followed by another unassisted goal from Sadler with 1:23 left on the clock. By the half, Queens had cut the Bulldogs' lead to just one, 4-3.

Queens would come out of the locker room ready to fight scoring two early goals in the third to take over control of the game, 5-4. With 11:58 on the clock, Swick would add to the Royals' lead scoring his first of the game off an assist from Smith to make the score 6-4.

Wingate answered pulling back within one, 6-5, but an unassisted goal from Sawyer put the Royals back in front by two, 7-5. At 3:12 on the clock, Henning would score his second of the game off an assist from Sadler to put the Royals up by three on the Bulldogs leading into the fourth period.

Wingate fought to overcome the deficit in the fourth, outscoring the Royals 3-1. However, the one goal scored by Queens' Swick at 4:42 proved to be pivotal as it allowed the Royals to hold out for the one-point win this evening.

Queens outshot the Bulldogs 41-27, putting 23 shots on goal to Wingate's 20. The Royals also totaled 37 ground balls to Wingate's 20. Paige won 19-of-21 face-offs and grabbed 15 ground balls. Goalkeeper Anthony Caruso walked away with the win in goal after registering 12 saves.

Wingate was led by Daniel Godwin and Llerandi who each scored two goals. Will Sheridan took the loss in the cage after totaling 14 saves.

Queens is on the road for their next match-up against Tusculum College in another SAC face-off. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
