Early Run Downs Royals on the Road

WINGATE, N.C. – A slow opening for the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team dropped the Royals on the road as they suffered a loss to Wingate University on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. The Bulldogs, the fourth ranked team in the Southeast Region, took the game with a 56-42 score to move to 18-4 overall and 14-3 within the league. Queens would fall to 4-18 on the year and 4-13 within the South Atlantic Conference.

Sarah Henson led the team, putting up 13 points and adding a pair of steals to the night. Cheyenne Logan and Maggie Stewart equaled at nine points apiece for the second highest point total on the team. Logan would also add seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal, as the team worked to find their way back into the game.

A four minute run by the home team saw Queens looking at a 13-0 start. McKell Oliverio found a jumper putting the team on the board at 6:06. The Royals eventually found themselves within nine points (15-6) with a basket from Logan. The teams swapped shots but Queens trailed at the end of the first period of play by 12 points (23-11).

The Royals found the basket first in the second quarter with a free-throw by Henson, which was followed by a basket from Oliverio to bring the team back under 10 (23-14); however, back-to-back baskets by the Bulldogs had the Royals looking at a 15 point deficit three minutes later. The two teams would head into the break with just 13 points of separation as both struggled to find baskets in the 10 minutes of play.

A slow build produced a 19 point lead for Wingate after three minutes ran off the clock in the third quarter. It would take three minutes to see the score start to move in their direction as Stewart made it a 15 point game with a shot from within the paint. With second remaining in the quarter, Logan found a basket only to have it answered by Alex Tomlinson, keeping the home team ahead by 16 (48-32).

Queens again shortened the lead with Logan and Stewart chipping away at the scoreboard. The team, however, would run out of time as the Bulldogs capped the win.

Marta Miscenko led the Bulldogs adding 13 points, four blocks, and three steals. Shelby Tricoli and Alex Tomlinson would tally nine and eight points, respectively.

Queens will head to Mars Hill on Saturday, February 11 to play the Lions at 2 p.m.
