No. 7 Queens Tops Saint Leo

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queen's University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team, ranked seventh in the nation, collected its second-straight victory today topping Saint Leo, 14-7. Queens improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Lions fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Royals were led by Kelly Dowd who totaled four goals and one assist. Alexandra Bruder also netted four goals, while Alison Conn, Abigail Paulus, Hanna Scott, Katy Miller, Katy Pawlikowski, and Sydney Lear each finished with one goal apiece. Scott led in assists with three, while Taylor Quade added two assists.

Queens took over the game early with a goal by Scott in the first 46 seconds of the opening half. A few minutes later, Queens scored two-consecutive goals, forcing the Lions to call a timeout. Saint Leo rallied to put their first shot in the back of the net but Queens ended the half on a 4-1 run. Both Dowd and Bruder claimed a hat-trick before the half concluded as the Royals broke with an 8-2 score.

Saint Leo opened the second half with two straight scores from both Sabrina Sanacore and Kaylah Walstad. However, the Royals respond with a pair of goals from Bruder and Paulus to make the lead 10-4 with 21:28 remaining.

After a goal put in the back of the net by the Lions' Lexie Walstad at the 19:10 mark created a back-and-forth affair, the Royals matched with goals from Dowd, Pawlikowski, and Miller to bring the lead to 13-7. Each team would exchange goals one more time in the final three minutes, as the Royals held on for the 14-8 victory.

Saint Leo was led by Katherine Larson's three goals, while Kaylah Walstad totaled one goal and one assist in the loss.

Queens won the battle in shots on goal 31-13, ground balls 23-15, and draw controls 16-7. Chase Brokaw of Queens finished the game with the win after totaling five saves.

The Royals can be seen back in action on Thursday, March 2 as they open South Atlantic Conference play against Catawba College. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
