CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team closed their regular season this afternoon with an 80-54 Senior Day victory over Tusculum College. The Royals finished the regular season with a 25-3 record on the year. Additionally, Queens secured a share of the SAC Regular Season Title after completing the season at 19-3 in league play. The title is their first since joining the SAC.
Senior
Daniel Camps led the Royals this afternoon, recording a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Mike Davis followed with 13 points and five rebounds, while
Todd Withers totaled 12 points and six rebounds.
Daniel Carr added nine points and six rebounds, while senior
Jared Hendryx chipped in with seven points, four rebounds, and four blocks.
The Royals quickly jumped out to a 15-5 lead at the start of today's game with the first pair of buckets coming from Hendryx and Camps. They would build as much as a 15-point lead before the Pioneers closed the half on a 15-6 run to cut the margin to six, 38-32, heading into the break.
Queens, not having their best game offensively, would just shoot 37.93-percent from the floor in the second half. However, the Royals turned up the pressure on the defensive end, holding the Pioneers to just 21.05-percent shooting in the period. Queens' stifling defense forced the Pioneers into a number of ball-handling mishaps, which the Royals capitalized on throughout the half. Queens saw its lead grow to its largest when a pair of free-throws from Carr put the home team ahead 26 points, 63-37, with 10:49 to play. For the game, the Royals converted Tusculum's 17 turnovers into 21 points. Additionally, Queens' bench scored 36 points in today's win.
Kendall Patterson and Ronnie Baylark each scored 11 points to lead the Pioneers. Cory Fagan added 10 points, while Chase Mounce pulled down 13 boards.
The Royals will be back in action in the SAC Championships when they host the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. They will face Anderson University for the third time this season after sweeping the Trojans in the regular season series.
