Royals Battle through Pfeiffer Loss

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (1-7) traveled to Pfeiffer University (2-0) today in double-header at Jack Ingram Field. The Falcons took both games seeing a 4-2 score in the first meeting before the Royals forced a 10 inning game in the second, suffering a 5-3 loss.

A scoreless opening from Queens led to the team trailing Pfeiffer in the first inning of the game.  A sacrifice fly from Kiana Millsaps brought Vada Blue Sherrill around the bases before Makenzie Pennell singled up the middle for Rachel Crowder, upping the score 2-0.

Pfeiffer was able to get a few more swings in the fourth, which resulted in another run on the board as Abi Peck scored after a hit from Sherrill (3-0).

Queens found their response in the next at bat. With two outs, Hanna Hasker worked her way around the bases off of a few miscues from the Falcon defense. Elaina Frantellizzi added another score winning the pitching battle to receive a free pass to base, brining Breanna Moore home. The walk cut the Pfeiffer lead to one, making the score 3-2.

The Falcons found one more run in bottom of the sixth as Kaleigh Troutman crossed home plate after a single to right field from Emma Tuttle.

Allison Lopez (0-1) pitched for the Royals in the seven innings, seeing eight hits out of the 29 batters she faced.

Kennedy Lester, Sydney Poole, and Caitlin Christian all saw time in the circle. Lester (1-0) recorded four strikeouts and only saw four hits facing 19 batters. Christian recorded her first save of the year with five strikeouts.

The second game was a hard-fought, defensive battle between both Queens and Pfeiffer as the two teams sat at nil through eight innings. Although the Royals were unable to record a hit through the eight innings of play, the team struck first putting a run upon the scoreboard. In the top of the ninth, Sydney Ditto recorded a sacrifice bunt bringing B. Martinez home. With two outs, Abby Lathan reached on a throwing error made by the third baseman which led to Ditto reaching home for a 2-0 score.

Pfeiffer would answer as Chandler Walker singled to right field recording an RBI as teammate Sydney Poole ran scored. With two outs, Tuttle singled to left center as Pennell made it home to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth.

To start the tenth inning, Brooke Sanford singled up the middle rounding Hasker to put the Royals up by one.

However, in the bottom of the tenth, Stephanie Fortner found a one base hit up the middle to bring home Sherrill. Peiffer ended the game with a homerun from Pennell to left field, who in the same play recorded two RBI's to clench their second win of the day with a score of 5-3.

Courtney Pearson (0-4) would pitch for Queens during the second game seeing 13 hits and four strikeouts. Christian (1-0) pitched the whole game for Pfeiffer, seeing three hits and seven strikeouts.

The Royals will look to bounce back as they prepare to host King University in a double-header Wednesday, February 15 at 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., at Park Road Park.
