ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team, seeded seventh in the
South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championships, took on top-seeded Wingate University in the SAC Championship final match this afternoon falling, 2-1, to the Bulldogs in double overtime.
The Bulldogs' Jon Ander would score a penalty kick in the 106
th minute to end today's championship match in double overtime. Wingate was awarded the penalty kick after a handball was called on the Royals in the box.
Ander was the first the strike in today's game scoring in the 27
th minute to put Wingate on top. Queen's
Adam Ward would respond with the first goal of his collegiate career in the 36
th to knot the game. Despite numerous opportunities to score on both sides, neither would find the back of the net again in regulation.
With just a combined total of three shots being taken prior to the penalty kick, it looked as if today's game was headed for a PK shootout. Unfortunately, the handball called in the 106
th minute on Queens would lead the Bulldogs to win their second SAC Championship in three seasons.
Queens was outshot, 18-12, this afternoon putting six shots on goal to Wingate's seven shots on goal. Both
Edmundo Robinson and Ward totaled two shots on goal apiece to lead Queens.
Sergio Lemus completed play in goal with five saves.
Following the game, the Royals placed three on the all-tournament team.
With the loss, the Royals' 2017 season comes to a close at 9-6-4.
