Queens Tops Lakers in Home Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team, currently ranked second in the nation, coasted to an 87-67 win over Clayton State University this evening. The Royals move to 3-0 on the year with the win while the Lakers open their season at 0-1.

Mike Davis led the Royals with 21 points after shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. He also totaled seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals. Todd Withers followed with 16 points and nine rebounds just missing a double-double, while Ike Agusi added 13 points and four assists. Jalin Alexander also reached double-figures scoring 12 points.

After what seemed to be a closely matched first half of play, Queens used an 11-3 run to take a 48-36 lead into the locker room. Less than five minutes into the second half, they extended the lead to 20, 60-40, on a triple from Withers, and three points the old-fashioned way from Alexander later gave the home team its largest lead of the night, 66-42. The Royals then coasted to victory not letting the Lakers get within 15 points of them in the remaining minutes of regulation.

The Royals shot 52.8-percent from the floor this evening while shooting 52.2-percent from the three. Clayton State was held to 39.6-percent shooting. Queens also dominated under the glass totaling 41 rebounds to the Lakers' 28 which led to the Royals to score 18 second-chance points on the night. Additionally, 30 of the Royals' 87 points were scored in the paint.

Denzel Council was the only Laker to reach double-digit scoring. He finished with 18 points, while both Aubrey McRae and Jacarl Owens added nine points each.

The Royals are back in action this weekend in Charlotte, N.C., at the JCSU Tip-Off Classic hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. Queens will face Livingstone College on Friday, Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. before taking on the Golden Bulls on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m.
