Royals Defeat UNCP in OT for first NCAA Championship Win in Program History

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – After advancing to the NCAA DII Women's Soccer Southeast Regional for the first time in 10 years, the fifth-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team grabbed its first ever NCAA Championship win today defeating fourth-seeded UNC-Pembroke, 1-0, in overtime. The Royals improve to 12-2-3 with the victory, while the Braves close their season at 15-5-1.

Despite the Royals and the Braves combining for 24 shots in regulation, neither team would find the back of the net forcing the match into overtime.

Queens' game-winner would come in the 100th minute of play from Thea Mallett following a foul. The lefty set up for a free kick on the left side of the 18-yard box, and lofted the ball over the wall set up by UNCP. The ball then traveled over the out stretched hands of Braves goalkeeper, Gina Ryan, giving Queens the win.

Queens goalkeeper Rachel Quest totaled seven saves and her ninth shutout of the season in today's match. Mallett led the Royals in shots on goal with five. She was followed by Emma Rose Stockton who had two shots on goal and Charlotte Ring who had one.

The Royals advance to the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Semifinals to face top-seeded Carson Newman University on Sunday, Nov. 12 in a 1 p.m. match. Queens fell to the Eagles, 4-2, earlier this season in a South Atlantic Conference matchup.
