Winning Streak Moves To Five In A Row For Women’s Volleyball With Sweep Of Eagles

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team moved its current winning streak to five games on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 27-25) victory over the Eagles of Carson-Newman University inside the Levine Center.

The Royals (12-4, 7-3 SAC) hit .219 as a team, committing just 11 attack errors while forcing the Eagles (7-8, 4-7 SAC) into 18 errors on offense.

Senior Jessica Raines continued her strong weekend, leading all players with 12 kills and a .323 hitting percentage, followed by eight kills from junior Taylor Henry. Senior Alex Thompson chipped in seven kills on a .438 hitting mark, while fellow senior Rebecca Cochran had seven kills of her own.

Queens carried over momentum from Friday night's five-set win, racing out to a 10-0 lead in the first set with senior Sydney Kunz at the service line. Kunz had three service aces during the run before Carson-Newman responded with six unanswered points of its own to close the gap to four.

The Eagles were able to cut the margin to a two-point deficit, however, a late 4-0 run helped Queens pull away and close out the set on top.

A Carson-Newman attack error and back-to-back kills from Cochran and Henry started the second set of play, as an 8-0 spurt from the Royals led to a 14-3 advantage. Queens was in control throughout the frame leading to a 2-0 edge in the match.

In the third, the Royals fell behind in the early going as CNU built a 15-8 lead over the hosts. Queens fought back with a 5-0 run to get within two points of the lead and eventually tied the set at 18-18 on a Thompson kill. The two sides tied the score five more times down the stretch but a Carson-Newman service error and a Cochran kill gave QU the win.

Freshman libero JayCee Jones led four Royals with double-digit digs, topping her previous season-high with 23 digs. Freshman Casey Tarvin and sophomore Mallory Swarts tallied 16 and 10 digs, respectively, while Kunz finished with 35 assists, 16 digs and four service aces to fill the stat sheet.

Queens puts it win streak on the line Tuesday, Oct. 10, when it hosts non-conference opponent Augusta University in Charlotte, N.C. at 7 p.m. The Royal earned a 3-1 win over the Jaguars earlier this season in the Queens Volleyball Invitational.
