CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team set or matched five program records on Tuesday night in a 3-1 (23-25, 30-28, 25-22, 25-14) non-conference win over the Jaguars of Augusta University.
The final match of a five-match homestand for Queens was no easy contest for either side as the Royals and Jaguars combined for 209 digs on defense, forcing each offense to earn its share of points.
Queens was able to put down 72 of 211 swings on the evening, tying the previous mark for kills in a single match that was set during the 2013 season. The mark was a program best for total kills in a four-set match as was the 211 attack attempts, besting the previous record of 184 which also occurred in 2013.
Leading the attack for the Royals was senior
Rebecca Cochran who finished with a match-high 22 kills and hit .258 from the outside.
Freshman
Casey Tarvin followed with a .256 hitting percentage and 14 kills, while senior
Jessica Raines, the reigning South Atlantic Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week, had 14 kills of her own. Junior
Taylor Henry chipped in 10 kills and hit .364 in the match and senior
Alex Thompson registered eight kills.
The largest lead of the opening set was a three-point margin for Queens following a Henry service ace at 13-10, but the Jaguars quickly tied the set at 15-all with a service ace of their own. The two sides traded points for the remainder of the set with Augusta's McKenzey Beck sealing the win with a kill. Beck finished the match with 16 kills, 25 assists and 16 digs for her seventh triple-double of the year.
The second set of action held much of the same back-and-forth play as the scoreboard displayed 12 total ties with neither team able to gain an edge of more than four points. Augusta held that four-point advantage at 22-18, but Queen stormed back with a 6-2 run to tie the set at 24-all.
Queens eventually ended the set on back-to-back kills from Raines and Henry to tie the match at one set apiece. In the second set, Queens racked up 23 total kills, including seven from the hand of Cochran and five each from Raines and Tarvin.
After beginning the third set on a 7-3 run, Queens opened up a 16-10 lead before the Jaguars put together a run of their own to gain a 21-19 advantage. The Royals were able to regroup and close out the set scoring six of the set's last seven points, the final coming on perfectly placed dump shot from senior setter
Sydney Kunz.
The Royals carried their momentum over into the fourth frame, controlling the set from start to finish and closing out the team's second victory over Augusta this season and sixth straight victory overall.
Kunz led all players with a career-high 64 assists in the match, setting a new program record for assists in a single game that was previously held by former Royal McKenzie Martin in 2012. As a team, the Royals dished out 68 assists, breaking the old program best of 67 that stood since the 2011 season.
Freshman
JayCee Jones led the defensive effort for Queens with 27 digs from her libero position, followed by 23 digs from Cochran and another 20 digs from freshman
Jordan Proszenyak. Kunz and sophomore
Mallory Swarts rounded out the individuals in double-digit digs with 14 and 11, respectively. Queens also added to its service ace total with eight aces on the night, including three from Henry and two more from Tarvin.
Queens returns to SAC play this weekend, traveling to South Carolina for consecutive matches against Coker College and Newberry College on Thursday and Saturday.
