CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The third-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (11-2-3, 8-2) hosted Anderson University (6-8-2, 5-5) in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Quarterfinals playing the Trojans to a 1-1 tie to force a penalty kick shootout. The Trojans, seeded sixth in the championships, went on to win 4-3 in the shootout to advance to the semifinals.
The Royals opened the scoring in the 16
th minute when
Jasmin Singh sent a cross into the box that
Alana Jefferson was able to get her head on and place in the back of the net for the lone goal of the half.
Anderson got life in the 70
th minute of play when Queens committed a foul inside the box that resulted in a penalty kick. Kirsten Armetta took the kick for the Trojans putting it into the back of the net.
The Royals continued their battle to put another point on the board for the win, and their chance would come in the 80th when a foul inside the box awarded a penalty kick for the home team. However,
Charlotte Ring's shot would be turned away by Anderson's Abby Helm keeping the game knotted at 1-1. Ring continued her pursuit firing another pair of shots at Anderson's keeper but both would come up short forcing extra time in tonight's match.
Despite recording nine shots over the two extra periods, the Royals remained scoreless in overtime. Fortunately, Anderson was unable to find the back of the net as well as the game ended in a draw. Anderson then took the win in a penalty kick shootout.
Jefferson struck first for the Royals making her shot just before Anderson's Lexxi Longmore was successful with her attempt as well. Up next for the Royals was
Thea Mallett, whose shot was blocked. Lauren Allan then stepped up second for Anderson netting her shot to put the Trojans up, 2-1. Shooting third for Queens was Lulu Phan, who finished her shot tying it back up 2-2.
Anderson's Fanny Karlsson was next and her shot was successful putting her squad back in front, 3-2. A miss from Queen's
Taylor Hunkele followed, but Queens saw some hope when Emilie Toftbjerg of the Trojans missed on the team's fourth attempt and
Charlotte Ring followed with a score to knot things at 3-3. However, Anderson's Abby Helm would step up to score the final shot to put her team on top, 4-3.
The Royals outshot Anderson, 29-5, putting 12 shots on goal to the Trojans' two. Queens goalkeeper
Rachel Quest totaled one save, while Helm of Anderson recorded 10 saves.
