Highlights
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team earned a 3-2 (23-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 16-14) victory over the visiting Pioneers of Tusculum College on Saturday afternoon to complete its third win in a row.
The Royals (18-5, 12-4 SAC) secured a season split with the Pioneers (14-12, 9-7 SAC) who won the previous meeting in five sets on Sept. 23 in Greeneville, Tenn. The five-set match was Queens' fifth of the year, while Tusculum completed its 11th five-setter.
Freshman
Casey Tarvin led all players with a career-high 23 kills, while senior
Rebecca Cochran followed with 17 kills and a career-high 28 digs. Freshman libero
JayCee Jones matched her previous career-high with 27 digs, as senior
Sydney Kunz registered 62 assists, 11 digs and two service aces. Fellow senior
Jessica Raines chipped in 12 kills of her own.
After Tusculum took an early lead in the match with a win in the opening set of play, Queens responded with a dominant 25-14 win in set two to tie the match at one-all. The Royals hit .361 in the second frame as Tarvin recorded seven kills in the set.
The Pioneers and Royals traded wins in the third and fourth sets, needing a deciding fifth set of action to name a winner. Queens began the frame with 5-1 lead before Tusculum rallied to tie the set at six points apiece.
A Tusculum service error put Queens back in front, but five unanswered points allowed the Pioneers to build an 11-7 lead. The Royals responded by taking a 14-13 lead before TC once again tied the set. However, Queens ended the match with two consecutive blocks to complete the comeback.
Senior
Alex Thompson was a part of both game-ending blocks, finishing with eight total blocks to go along with eight kills. Sophomore
Mallory Swarts and freshman
Jordan Proszenyak finished with 15 and 10 digs on defense, respectively.
Queens will have a week off of competition before welcoming Catawba College to the Levine Center next Friday night at 7 p.m. The Royals will honor its four-member senior class during the evening.
