CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team gave head coach
Hannah Long her 400th career win with a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-12) victory over No. 24 Wingate University on Tuesday night.
The Royals (16-5, 10-4 SAC) tallied 94 digs and eight total blocks in holding the Bulldogs (18-2, 12-2 SAC) to a season-low .151 hitting percentage. In comparison Queens hit .233 as a unit to solidify its third place standing in the South Atlantic Conference.
Queens and Wingate were nearly equal in the opening set of play as the Royals came away with a two-point win. The Bulldogs responded with a win of their own in the second set to tie the match at 1-all.
In the third set of action, Queens led early by a 5-3 margin before Wingate tied the match at 6-6. The two sides played to eight more ties down the stretch until four unanswered points gave the Royals a 23-20 lead. Senior
Rebecca Cochran ended the frame with a kill to put her team ahead 2-1 in the match.
The Royals controlled the fourth and final set of play from start to finish, leading by as large a margin as 17-4. Queens ended the set with a 5-1 run, including two kills from senior
Alex Thompson, to complete the upset.
Freshman
Casey Tarvin celebrated her birthday in style, leading all players with 16 kills. The Leander, Texas native hit .240 at the net and registered nine digs on defense to go along with two total blocks.
Cochran followed with 14 kills and 16 digs for a double-double, while fellow senior
Jessica Raines had 11 kills and four total blocks. Thompson hit .364 in the match with six kills and five total blocks, as junior
Taylor Henry also recorded six kills to go along with eight digs and three total blocks.
Senior
Sydney Kunz directed the offense with 48 assists as well as 12 digs for her 11th double-double of the year, while sophomore
Mallory Swarts and freshman
JayCee Jones each finished with 18 digs on defense.
Queens continues its week by hosting Mars Hill University and Tusculum College on Friday and Saturday in the Levine Center.
