HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team moved its current winning streak to seven games with a 3-2 (25-14, 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 15-11) win over the Cobras of Coker College on Thursday night inside the DeLoach Center.
With the win, the Royals improved to 14-4 overall and 8-3 in South Atlantic Conference play, while the Cobras fell below the .500 mark at 9-10 with a 4-7 mark in the league.
Queens was in control early, committing just 10 attack error over the first two sets of play. The Royals held a four-point lead late in the first set before closing out the frame on an 8-1 run, highlighted by consecutive kills from senior
Alex Thompson, to seal the win.
After Coker scored the first point of the second set, Queens opened a 5-2 lead and was in control throughout, cruising to a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Royals hit .229 in the set, while holding Coker to a .111 hitting mark.
In the third and fourth sets, the Cobras defended their home court with consecutive 25-22 wins, forcing Queens into 15 combined attack errors and leading to a deciding fifth set of play.
The final set of action began with a kill from senior
Rebecca Cochran as the Royals jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before Coker tied the set at 6-6. After a Queens attack error put the Cobras in front, the two sides played to five ties down the stretch with neither team able to gain a lead of more than one point.
However, senior
Jessica Raines put a ball down to spark a 5-0 run that ended with consecutive kills from junor
Taylor Henry, giving the Royals the road victory.
Raines led the offense with 17 kills from the right side and freshman
Casey Tarvin followed with 13 kills of her own as well as two service aces. Cochran finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 18 digs, while Henry chipped in 10 kills with a .333 hitting percentage to go along with six total blocks.
Senior
Sydney Kunz led all players with 50 assists and also had 14 digs for her ninth double-double, while freshmen
JayCee Jones and
Jordan Proszenyak tallied 23 and 15 digs, respectively.
Queens continues SAC play with a trip to Newberry College on Saturday, Oct. 14 with first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
