Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 3 Queens Upset at Home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team, ranked third in the nation, was upset this evening by Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference play. The loss ends the Royals' 16-0 win streak, bringing their overall record to 16-1. Queens also sits 10-1 in the league. The Bulldogs are now on a seven-game win streak at 7-4 in the SAC and 10-7 on the year.

The Royals, who average nearly 90 points a game saw just two players reach double-digit scoring tonight. Todd Withers led, netting 17 points on five-of-nine shooting. He also totaled five rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Jalin Alexander added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The rivalry game did not disappoint as the first 20 minutes of action featured four ties and nine lead changes. Despite shooting 46.2-percent from the floor in the opening half compared to Wingate's 38.5-percent clip, the Royals found themselves having to battle with the Bulldogs throughout the period.

A three-pointer from Queens' Ike Agusi gave the home team its largest lead of the half, 13-7, with 12:48 to play, and by the 4:03 mark the Bulldogs were holding their largest lead of the period, 26-21, thanks to a triple from Mike Baez. Queens responded closing the half putting together a string of short runs to take a 33-31 lead into the locker room.

The second half played out much like the first until the Bulldogs were able to pull away around the nine minute mark. A dunk from Wingate's Keith Griffin knotted things up at 53-53, and ignited an 11-0 run that put the visitors ahead 62-53 with 4:43 left in regulation. A three-pointer from Queens' Mike Davis cut the margin to six, but both teams then went scoreless for the next two minutes. Another three-pointer, this time from Alexander, brought Queens to within two, 64-62, of the Bulldogs with 52 seconds to play, but Wingate's Baez answered with a triple on the very next play to keep his team in front with 18 ticks on the clock. The Bulldogs then connected on four-of-six from the charity stripe to secure the road win.

Baez led Wingate with 17 points, while Anthanee Doyle and Isiah Cureton each scored 12 points. Cureton also totaled 12 rebounds for a double-double. Zeriq Lolar chipped in with 11 points, and Griffin added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Queens will head to Anderson University on Saturday, January 21 for a rematch with the Trojans. The Royals defeated the Trojans 75-63 back in December. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
