Jones Opens the Season with Broken School Record as Royals Split the Day

Charlotte, N.C.-  The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team found their first win of the season as they took a 3-0 victory in their opening match against Francis Marion. The Royals would put together three solid sets going 26-24, 25-16, 25-21. Game two would fall to USC-Aiken but not after five hard fought sets by the Royals producing a 26-24, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 17-15 Pacers score. Meredith Jones set a school record in the USC-Aiken game with 25 kills in a single match, the highest tally by two.

In the battle for the first set, both Francis Marion and Queens held tight with the Royals finding a narrowly, late set lead at 20-18. Francis Marion came back to tie the match at 21 all then again at 24 -24. Queens found its break in Rebecca Cochran whose serve found the Patriots' floor and in Taylor Henry who powered one over the net for the kill.

The two-point win in set one powered the Royals through the opening points of set two as they reached out to a 6-1 lead. A timeout helped to refocus the Patriots who found their way back to make the game 11-11. However, Queens soon extended their stretch to 20-13 score with the help of three kills from Henry. Although the team found set point with a hit from Cochran, Francis Marion battled to add two more kills on their score.

Mirroring the first set, both teams sat even through the opening points. The first true run came from Queens scoring four in a row with the help with a service ace from Cochran and two Queens' blocks. As the game progressed, Queens developed a strong lead holding at 24-17. Francis Marion would again add points late in the match but a called timeout regrouped the Royals to take the match off a kill from Cochran.

Meredith Jones led the team with 12 kills as Cochran grabbed 11. Jones also led the Royals in service aces tabbing three in the match as Cochran and Henry mirrored at two apiece. Megan Mancini tabbed 18 digs in the match.

Georgia Garrison, who found the floor for 10 kills, led the Patriots for the night. Shelbi Meek led in digs tabbing 18.

The second match of the day for the team saw the Royals battle through five sets against the Pacers of USC-Aiken. Queens led the floor in almost all of the statistical categories toping Aiken in kills, 63-62, in blocks, 13-3, and in service aces, 8-5.

In addition to Jones's record in kills, 25, Jessica Raines tabbed another 12 kills while Cochran tabbed ten in the match. Henry led the team with blocks at nine while Mancini tallied 21 digs.

For Aiken, Julia Forster topped the team with 19 kills as Danielle Mercer tabbed 28 digs.

The first set of the match went point for point with both teams tying 17 times. After meeting at 24-24, Aiken found back-to-back points to take the game and grab momentum heading into set two.

Queens opened strong taking three unanswered in the set; however, the two teams again met at six-all. Unlike the first set, Queen launched into a run that put them ahead at 23-15. Jones captured the win finding space on the Pacers' floor to bring about an even match.

Retaining their momentum, Queens held the lead from start to finish in their third set. A quick timeout by the Royals at 24-19 refocused the group after Aiken closed the gap on a 24-15 score.

The next two sets would be a battle for the floor. Like the opening game, both teams sat even throughout the set looking for an edge. The two would meet at 22-22 as Jones rallied a hit for the go-ahead point; however, three costly Queens' errors put the set in Aiken's favor.

An early start had Aikin with a 7-4 lead as the two teams switched sides. The Pacers continued to climb knocking down two more points to put them ahead at 9-4 forcing a Queens' timeout. Despite the shorten game, Queens battled to come within one point at 11-10 as Raines tabbed the kill. As momentum shifted, Queens found a tie at 12-12. They would stay even through the next few points to bring the game to 15-all. Unfortunately for the Royals, Aiken found their answer grabbing the next two points to close out the match.

Competition resumes tomorrow for Queens as they play Lander at 3 p.m., and Augusta University at 7 p.m. in the Royals Fall Volleyball Invitational.
