Royals Rally for a Five Set Win over Coker

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team battled through five sets for a 25-14, 24-26, 18-25, 25-18, 15-7 win over the Cobras of Coker. Queens moved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Coker would drop to 6-3 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Offensively, Meredith Jones tallied 16 kills while Rebecca Cochran grabbed 15. The Royals would have eight service aces in the match with Sydney Kunz grabbing three and Cochran and Megan Mancini equaling at two. Kunz also had 46 assists.

The Cobras were led by Bethan Prochnow with 15 kills. Christen Bragg secured 23 assists as Kara Overhold tabbed 24 digs to lead their team in their respective categories.

It was an early run for Queens as they took an 11-2 score to start the match. The Royals continued to push the set eventually taking a 10 point lead over the Cobras at 18-8.  The separation put the game out of Coker's grasp as the Royals moved on to set 2 with a win.

Another strong run opened set 2 as Queens found an 8-2 lead; however, Coker was able to battle back to come within two at 10-8 off a kill from Prochnow. Queens held the lead for a few more points but Coker eventually took over at 17-16. The Royals managed to stay close, tying the Cobras on four occasions but they were never able to regain the lead.

Coker took the early run in set 3 launching out to an 8-4 score before Queens evened the game again at 9-9. A late run, however, gave Coker the win at 25-18 forcing a must win situation for the Royals

Fighting to stay alive, Queens trailed Coker before taking the go-ahead point ,11-10. Queens held a slight lead for most of the set but a four point run gave them some space, 24-17, to eventually claim the set and bring about a fifth game for the match.

Four straight kills gave the Royals momentum. Coker slowly added points but the Royals continued to knock down shots taking the win for the match.

Queens will be back in action on Tuesday, September 20, at 7 p.m. The Royals will host Francis Marion.
