CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team was able to grab their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season this afternoon, defeating Lincoln Memorial University by a score of 3-1 on Dickson Field. The win improves the Royals' overall record to 3-3 on the year, while they sit at 1-1 in the league. The Railsplitters fall to 1-4 on the year and 1-1 in the SAC.
Freshman midfielder
Thea Mallett put the home team on the board at minute 48, scoring on a penalty kick which followed a hand ball in the box. The goal was her fifth of the season.
Lincoln Memorial had an answer for the Royals' goal in the 61
st, when Melissa Carpenter snuck a ball in the net behind Queens goalkeeper
Rachel Quest. However, the tie would be short lived as an own goal in the 62
nd would return control to Queens. The own goal was scored on a poor clearance that was headed into the net.
Queens quickly followed the own goal with another score in the 65
th when junior defender
Jasmin Singh found the back of the net on a header off of a corner from senior defender
Ashley Osiecki.
In the first half of today's game, Queens' best opportunity to net a goal bounced off the inside of the post in the 35
th minute resulting in today's 0-0 score at the break.
The Royals dominated play today outshooting the Railsplitters 25-3, putting 10 shots on goal. Quest finished the game with one save for the win.
Queens will return to Dickson Field on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Wingate University.
