CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team faced Lindenwood University today, defeating the Lions 3-2 in overtime. The win moves the Royals' record to 3-2 on the year, while Lindenwood drops to 3-1.
A foul inside the penalty circle would allow sophomore midfielder
Mazvita Mtisi to score the game winner on a penalty stroke in the 81
st minute of play.
Prior to the overtime period, the Royals and Lions played to a tie at the end of regulation. Queens held a 2-0 lead at the half after
Meghan Smiga and
Kayleigh Lawrence scored two unanswered goals for the home team. Smiga would score on a rebounded shot in the 14
th, while Lawrence's goal came in the 20
th.
The Lions came back in the second half putting two points on the board from Tara Robben and Greta Banholzer.
The Royals were outshot 13-10, putting five shots on goal to the Lions' seven.
Miranda Childers completed play with five saves for the win.
Queens will be on the road at Limestone College tomorrow. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
