Catawba, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team found an 8-1 win over the Indians of Catawba College on Thursday, April 7, 2016. With the win, Queens moved to a 9-2 overall record and 7-1 within the South Atlantic Conference. Catawba fell to 9-11 overall and 4-6 in the SAC after the day.
"This Catawba team made us work today," said Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "I'm proud of my guys for seeing some tough matches all the way through to the end. We are still improving as a team and I believe that our best tennis is still in front of us."
The Royals swept the doubles courts putting three quick points onto the board. All three matches would see their way to an 8-2 score as
Per-Erik Soler and
Andor Vas tabbed the win on court one.
Jules Athalis and
Giovanni Setti topped court two while
Jordan Owens and
Will Roberson took the third court.
As the team moved into singles play, the Royals tabbed five wins taking courts one, two and three from Soler, Athalis, and Vas, respectively. Soler would find a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jack Mordey as Athalis tabbed a 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 win against Lucas Miller. Vas would take a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Michael Patch.
In a one set victory, Owens took an 8-2 win over Mitchell McDonald while
Zachary Williams rounded out the day with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win on court six.
Queens will be back in action on Saturday as the team honors its graduating class. The Royals will host Carson-Newman for a 2 p.m., match time.
