Brevard, N.C- The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team found a 5-1 win over the No. 48-ranked Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday, April 23, 2016. Queens would defeat the second seed team in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament to move to a 13-3 overall record while Wingate would concluded the semifinal match with a record of 15-6 overall.
This is the first time since 2011 that the men's team has found a spot in a conference title match. Queens went on to claim the Conference Carolinas Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Limestone.
Two quick doubles points put the Royals ahead in the match as they claimed the top flight with doubles partners
Per-Erik Soler and
Andor Vas and claimed flight two with partners
Jules Athalis and
Giovanni Setti. Soler and Vas would put together an 8-1 score to take the first match of the day. Athalis and Setti followed with the second point going 8-4.
Although Wingate tabbed the win on court three to hang just a point behind heading into the singles matches, Queens saw three straight wins to take the match and secure their spot in the finals.
Ole-Jacob Meum was the first to conclude singles play as he defeated Westin Bennett 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Soler tallied his victory next to take the top flight with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Claiming the match point was Athalis who battled through a first set of 7-6 to take the tie break at 7-3. Athalis provided space in his second set to claim the match winning point with a 6-3 score.
The Royals will face Newberry in the SAC finals tomorrow. The two teams will face off at 12 p.m., at Brevard College.
