Box Score 4 Raleigh, N.C.—The Queens University of Charlotte softball team posted a 4-1 record for the Shaw Tournament, this past weekend, to move to 11-10 overall. The team would find victories over Bowie State, Virginia State, St. Augustine's, and Winston-Salem State before suffering a loss to Wayne State.
Queens would find the win over Bowie State starting with two runs in the first inning. Despite Bowie State challenging with a run in the fourth, the Royals found seven runs to close out the sixth inning to win the game.
The Virginia State game sat even at 0-0 through the first five innings with
Samantha Martinez breaking through in the top of the sixth to put the first run on the board. Queens would score three unearned runs to claim the game as
Taylor Rosenbalm and
Sydney Ditto made it home in the seventh inning.
It was a close game heading into the final inning against St. Augustine's. Queen held a one run lead after tabbing two runs in the first inning and one run in the third to hold a 3-2 score. It was not until the fifth inning that Queens found their stride, placing nine runners across the plate starting with a single from
Elaina Frantellizzi to bring in
Lyndey McCurry. The team would go on to win the game 12-2 in five innings.
The team's last win of the weekend was against Winston-Salem State totaling a 9-1 score after opening the game with five scoring plays in the first inning. Not finished, the Royals added two more runs in the second inning to make it a 7-1 lead. They would conclude after seven innings with Queens taking the win.
One inning proved to be the difference as Wayne State found a grand slam from Jade McGarr to put four runs on the board in the fourth inning. They would add one run in the sixth with Queens struggling to find their answer in the game, falling 5-0.
McCurry pitched three games adding two wins to her pitching record to become 6-3 on the season. She would only give up two runs in a total of 18.2 innings.
Evie Scott also saw time in three games to go 2-1 during the weekend. Pitching a total of nine innings, she would give up five runs and six hits.
Catelyn Presley rounded out the Royals pitching lineup finding time in two game and taking the save against Bowie State. She pitched 4.1 innings seeing only one batter reach home.
Queens will face Lander University on March 8, 2016 in a double-header matchup at 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., in Greenwood, S.C.
