Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (4-18, 2-15 SAC) found themselves down by only three at the half, but had a tough time keeping pace in the second half as they fell to the visiting Wingate Bulldogs (13-8, 9-7 SAC) 56-35 on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.
The Royals shot 24 percent from the field in the game but were able to make 6-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Carmen Richardson led Queens in scoring as she added in nine points. Karlesha Thompson was the team's leading rebounder as she gathered six to go along with eight points and four assists.
Both teams came out of the gate a little cold as the Royals took a 6-5 lead following the Royals first field goal of the game, a three-pointer by Richardson with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter. Wingate answered back as they went on an 8-0 run to take a seven point, 13-6 lead with just under a minute to play in the first. The Bulldogs held a slight lead on Queens for much of the second quarter as Kristina Rumplasch hit a jumper to give them a 21-15 lead with 3:51 remaining in the first half. Queens had an answer as they went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 21 following a jumper by
Maggie Stewart with 24 seconds remaining. Wingate's Morgan McGee nailed a three pointer with five seconds left in the half to give the Bulldogs a three point, 24-21 lead going into the break.
Wingate came out of halftime on an 8-2 run to take a 32-23 lead over the Royals with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter. McGee who made three field goals and hit two free throws, scored all eight of the Bulldogs points during the run.
Erin Brundage hit a three pointer to cut the lead down to 36-28 with 3:58 to play in the third. Over the next 13 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs would only allow the Royals to score two points, a jumper by
Tyra Shelton with 5:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, while Wingate jumped out to a 54-30 lead with just over two minutes to play. The Royals would add five more points in the last minute of the game as Richardson would steal the ball for a fastbreak layup and
McKell Oliverio hit a three pointer, but Wingate's lead was too strong as they defeated the Royals 56-35.
The Bulldogs were led by Morgan McGee who scored 13 points and added in five rebounds in the game. The only other player for Wingate to score in double digits was Marta Miscenko who scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Royals will be at home in their next game as they play host to Mars Hill on Homecoming this Saturday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. in the Levine Center.
