CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Â The No.6 Southeast Regionally ranked Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team defeated Carson-Newman on Friday, November 4, 2016, in a four-set match. The Royals went 23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-14 in the match for the win moving to a 18-5 overall record and 15-3 within the South Atlantic Conference. Carson-Newman fell to 3-24 on the year and 2-17 within the conference.
The team started the night with a service ace from
Taylor Henry to begin the match against the Eagles. Although Carson-Newman held close, Queens forced a timeout call at 11-6 after 4-1 run. The Eagles took two coming out of the timeout to pull within three, challenging for the set. Queens was forced to use timeout as Carson-Newman took the lead at 17-16; however, the Royals would not be able to hold on suffering the loss to the Eagles.
Battling back in set two, Queens launched to a 10-5 score forcing Carson-Newman to use a timeout. The Royals would add six coming out of the break winning a couple of long rallies against the Eagles. Carson-Newman called a timeout but the team never recovered as Queens evened the match at a set apiece.
A slow start to the third set had Queens calling a timeout at 10-5. Queens, however, battled to take a 11-3 run reclaiming the lead along the way. As the two teams swapped points heading towards the end of the set, Queens used a timeout call with the score tied at 22-22. Service errors from both teams moved the game to 23-23 before
Meredith Jones could find back-to-back kills to lay claim to the set.
Energized off the win, the Royals forced their way out to an early 12-0 lead in the fourth set of the match. Carson-Newman used a timeout call at 19-8 but Queens went on to close out the match.
Jones led the floor with 18 kills while
Rebecca Cochran led in digs with 20. The Royals delivered a strong serving game putting up 11 service aces as
Mallory Swarts topped the team with three.
Sydney Kunz contributed 41 of the teams 45 assists in the match.
Carson-Newman saw Marnie Streeter tally 15 kills. Taylor Low tabbed 30 digs for the team to lead in the category while Anna Patton led in assists with 32.
The Royals will be back on the court tomorrow for Senior Day as the team hosts the 4
th- ranked team in the region and first in the conference, Lincoln Memorial. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m., following a recognition of
Megan Mancini, Jones, and
Kelsey McCormick for their contributions to the program.
