Royals Leap Past Lincoln Memorial on Senior Day

CHARLOTTE, N.C- The No. 6th-regionally ranked Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team defeated the fourth ranked team in the Southeast region, Lincoln Memorial, on Saturday, November 5, 2016, in four sets. Going 25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20, in the match the Royals tabbed the win to move to 19-5 overall and 16-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lincoln Memorial fell to 22-6 on the year and 16-4 in conference play.

With 23 kills and 14 digs in the four set match, Meredith Jones saw a double-double to lead the team in both statistical categories. Sydney Kunz led the team in assists with 53 to contribute to the team's 67 total assists. Rebecca Cochran finished the day with 16 kills and three service aces.

On the Railsplitters' side, Kiera Holland tallied 20 kills as Abby Cash put up 38 assists and 19 digs. Erica Whiteaker led the team in digs with 27.

A dominate start saw Queens push out to a 12-5 lead in the first set, forcing LMU to use a timeout call. The Railsplitters forced a slight shrink in the gap but the team was forced to use their second timeout as Jessica Raines popped a kill over the net for a 17-10 lead. Small runs allowed Lincoln Memorial to close the gap to five points but Jones secured the win for the team with a driving hit.

Although a closer start, Queens still held the lead through the opening points of the second set.  The team would extend to a 10-5 score but the Royals were forced to call timeout after a four point run pulled LMU within one point at 12-11. The two teams swapped points eventually seeing a tie at 16-16 but Queens bounced back to take the next four points. The Royals held a narrow lead heading into the closing points of the game as the team found the win at the hands of Raines.

Lincoln Memorial started the game finding a 7-1 lead as Queens used a timeout call early in the third set. The Railsplitters continued to hold control but the Royals challenged the lead off a 4-0 run to make it a 12-10 LMU score. The Royals would eventually find the tie at 12-12 before taking the lead at 19-18. As the two teams battled, Queens found a gap just two points shy of the match, 23-20, but a string of errors pulled the Railsplitters back in to eventually take the set.

An even start in the fourth set saw a slight lead fall towards Lincoln Memorial's side. The Royals, however, switched momentum with seven unanswered points to take hold of the match at 16-10. Lincoln Memorial would battle back to tie the match at 19-19 but another run from Queens saw the lead push out to 22-19. The Royals concluded the match with three back-to-back kills from Jones.

The Royals will finish the rest of their regular season schedule on the road, starting with Lenoir-Rhyne on November 8th at 7 p.m.
