WINGATE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team is set to play in the South Atlantic Conference Semifinals hosted at Wingate University on Friday, November 18, 2016. The match, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., pits the top seed of the tournament Wingate, 27-5 overall, against the Royals, 20-8 overall, who placed fourth in the conference seeding.
The Royals enter off a 3-1 win over Anderson this past Tuesday on their home court, overcoming a recent regular season loss to the Trojans. Queens rallied in the match, finding victories within contested sets for the win. The momentum should help launch the Royals into tournament play as they face a Wingate team that is on a three-match winning streak after defeating Tusculum 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Although Wingate holds a 2-0 record in regular season competition between the two schools, the Royals hold plenty of talent including SAC Player of the Year
Meredith Jones and all-conference recipients
Sydney Kunz,
Megan Mancini, and
Rebecca Cochran. The team ranks inside the Top 100 statistically in kills, kills per set, service aces, service aces per set, assists, assists per set, digs, and digs per set. They also hold a No. 30 ranking in total blocks as well as placing at No. 24 for blocks per set.
Additionally, both team's hold regional significance as Queens lands at No. 7 in the Southeast and Wingate posts at second.
This is the second year in a row that Queens has landed a spot in the SAC Championships. Last year the team faced the eventual tournament champions, Lenoir-Rhyne in the quarterfinals.
