Hot Shooting from Withers Leads Royals Past Lakers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team improved their record to 2-0 this afternoon after picking up an 81-71 win over Clayton State University in Curry Arena. The Lakers move to 1-1 on the year with the loss.

Queens' Todd Withers scored 25 points to lead all players on the floor after connecting on 7-of-11 from downtown. Daniel Camps and Mike Davis each scored 14 points, while Ike Agusi totaled 10 points and six assists. Davis also led the Royals with eight rebounds, while Withers tallied seven boards.

With 8:54 on the clock in the opening half, Queens held a 13-point lead, 30-17, over the Lakers that would be cut to zero by the end of the period. After the Royals' Jalin Alexander gave the home team its largest lead of the period with a layup that capped an 8-0 run, Clayton State responded closing the gap to 10 on four different occasions before ending the half with a 9-3 run to knot the game at 39-39 heading into the break. The Lakers finished the half with 11 of their points being scored off of the Royals' nine turnovers.

In the second half, Clayton State took over the lead for a short period of time before Withers of Queens got hot and knocked three in a row down from deep to help the Royals regain control and build a 55-47 lead with 14:18 on the clock. Later with 6:38 to play, Withers capped a 13-0 run with another three to give Queens an 11-point lead, 65-54. The Royals never looked back after the run as the Lakers could only pull within eight of the home team before the final horn sounded.

Clayton State was led by Nathan Powell who scored 14 points. Alfonso Davis and Dantez Bennamon chipped in with 12 points apiece, while Jaumonee Byrd scored 10 points.

Queens will remain at home for their next game on Tuesday, November 15 when they host Johnson & Wales University at noon in Curry Arena.
