CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team opened their season this evening against Armstrong State University at home in the Embassy Suites South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference Tip-Off Challenge. Royals defeated the Pirates, 101-83, to open their 2016-17 campaign at 1-0. Armstrong State gets off to a 0-1 start with the loss.
Senior forward
Daniel Camps delivered a show stopping performance this evening which included a number of high flying dunks. He would finish the game with 25 points to lead all players on the floor, and 10 rebounds to grab his first double-double of the season.
Todd Withers added 18 points, while
Jalin Alexander added 14 points.
Jared Hendryx and
Mike Davis chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
After shooting 57-percent from the floor in the opening half, Queens found themselves holding a 49-36 lead heading into the break. The Royals only trailed for a short period of time very early in the half before a layup at from Camps tied the game at 7-7 and started a 13-6 run that put Queens ahead 20-13 with 10:57 to play. The Royals quickly extended their lead to 10 and went on to lead by as much as 18, 48-30, before the halftime break.
The Royals kept control of the game in the second shooting an impressive 61-percent from the floor. They would see their largest lead of the night when a lay-in from Davis put Queens ahead by 27, 96-69, with 10:10 on the clock.
Denzel Council led the Pirates with 21 points, while KJ James added 20 points. Both players recorded double-doubles as Council totaled 11 rebounds and James had 10 rebounds.
Queens will return to Dale Layer Court tomorrow afternoon when they take on Clayton State University at 4 p.m. to wrap the Embassy Suites SAC/PBC Tip-Off Challenge.
