CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team defeated Newberry College in five sets on October 7, 2016. The 25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 25-18, 15-8 win bumped the Royals to 10-4 overall and 7-2 within the South Atlantic Conference. The Wolves left with a 9-9 overall record and a 6-4 record in conference play.
Sydney Kunz broke a new school record during the match concluding with a total of 2,136 career assists for the most in school history. Â
Continuing to show strength in serving, the Royals grabbed a total of 11 service aces as
Mallory Swarts led the category with four. Kunz led the team in assists as she aided in 43 kills to give her the career record during the match. She finished the night with a double-double adding 11 digs.
Megan Mancini tabbed 16 digs as
Meredith Jones led in kills with 20.
Logan Hayward led the Wolves with 18 kills. Maggie Marsh had 42 assists while Natalie Willis tabbed 15 digs. The Wolves would have 54 kills as a time in addition to five service aces.
The first set held a slight lead in favor of the Royals at 14-12 as Queens came from behind with three straight points. A timeout call by the Wolves gave them the next point to move within one but Queens responded, putting six points on the board to move ahead 20-13. Newberry would add four more points but Queens capped the set.
The second set saw both teams battle evenly with a breakout coming from the Royals for an 11-8 lead. Newberry soon followed with a five point run to pull ahead, 13-11, leaving Queens trailing behind for the remainder of the set.
Queens jumped out to an early lead in set three but Newberry saw a slow build to pull back within one, 8-7. The leading team fluctuated throughout the match but Queens grabbed the 25
th point to make it a 25-24 score; however two kills and an error gave the Wolves the go-ahead set.
Rallying, the Royals posted a 6-2 score in the fourth set but Newberry found the tie at 7-7. The Royals took a slight lead but found strength after seven unanswered points to make the game 17-9. The Wolves would never recover as Queens forced a deciding set.
In the final set, Queens grabbed an early 5-1 lead before adding a 4-1 run to the score. As the Royals maintained their gap, Newberry used their final timeout trailing 12-5. Â The Wolves would be unable to make up ground as Queens closed out the set and the game with a kill from Jones.
The Royals will be back at home tomorrow as the team hosts Anderson University at 2 p.m., at Curry Arena.
