Royals Top Anderson in Four Sets

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team took a 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20 win over Anderson University on Saturday, October 8, 2016. Queens saw a personal record set by Rebecca Cochran who notched 21 kills in the match to lead the team. The Royals moved to a 11-4 overall record and an 8-2 South Atlantic Conference record with the win. Anderson fell to .500 on the season as the team took an 9-9 overall record and a 6-5 league record.

Meredith Jones contributed to the Royals success finding an additional 14 kills for the team to place behind Cochran in the statistical category. Megan Mancini led the team in service aces, four, and digs, 15, as the Royals fought for the match.

Anderson saw Emily Conlin tab a double-double with 41 assists and 14 digs, leading her team in both categories. Rachel Burts led the team with kills tabbing 12.

Although Queens trailed early, 6-2, the first set proved to be a battle for both teams as the game tied on ten occasions. The Royals secured the lead for the final time off a kill from Cochran who moved the set to a 20-19 score. Mancini tabbed the game win with a service ace a few plays later.

The Royals struggled against the Anderson serving game in set two as the team suffered four reception errors early in the set. The team soon found themselves trailing by 10 points with a timeout call to regain focus at 20-10. Starting to close the gap, Queens battled back within five points of the Trojans, 22-17, forcing a timeout call from the Anderson side. The Royals continued to fight but Anderson evened the match with the game win.

A pair of service aces and a pair of blocks had the Trojans calling an early timeout at 5-1. The call would not halt momentum as Queens soon led 14-6 with the second timeout call coming from the Anderson bench.  Queens held the lead for the remainder of the set to grab a 2-1 lead over the Trojans in the match.

Although slight, Queens led in the opening points of set four. The Royals eventually forced Anderson to call timeout pulling ahead by six, 16-10. Anderson found some momentum to hang on at the end knocking down three back-to-back points, but Jones closed the competition with a kill.

The Royals will play on October 11th traveling to Armstrong State for a 6 p.m., match in Savannah, Ga.
