Royals Fall Short on the Road at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team was back in action today on the road at Newberry College. The Royals would fall 3-2 to the Wolves in double overtime bringing their record to 4-4 on the year. The Wolves improve to 4-5 on the season.

After finding themselves trailing 2-0 at the half, Queens battled back late to tie tonight's game at 2-2 before the end of regulation. Andi Weinberg would score the first goal for the Royals in the 69th minute to cut Newberry's lead to one, and Meghan Smiga would follow with one in the 70th to knot things up. Smiga's goal in the 70th would force the game into overtime as neither team got another shot off before the horn sounded.

With no goal scored in the first overtime period, the game continued into a second period of extra time where Meghan Jolikko scored the game winning goal on a penalty stroke in the 98th minute.

Queens was outshot 15-9 as Newberry put 12 shots on goal to the Royals' eight. Miranda Childers completed her time in the cage with eight saves.

Queens will return home to Dickson Field on Friday to take on Molloy College at 4 p.m.
