Charlotte, NC - The 46th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team (1-0) swept Johnson C. Smith (0-2) on Saturday, January 30, 2016, taking the match with a 9-0 score. The match was the first victory of the season for the Royals.

"Today's effort was a good team result for our squad, "said Head Coach Billy Boykin. "Everyone contributed and I thought the guys competed hard. We are looking forward to season. I'm also happy for our two freshmen, Jordan Owens and Giovanni Setter. They logged their first career single wins today."

Queens secured clean wins on all three double courts not giving up a single game. Grabbing the first point, Zachary Williams and Mack Dalton came out with an 8-0 Royals' victory against Gerald Miller and Tarick Miller in the number two doubles spot. Will Roberson and Sean Harris defeated Sharif Axam and Bradley Girgorio taking an 8-0 score as the number one doubles duo. Concluding the pair play, Andor Vas and Thomas Hunter Harbin won over Hazel Vazquez and Anthony Jefferson with another match sweep of 8-0.

Queens kept momentum through the single matches dropping only two games throughout all six matchups. Roberson took the first point for the team in singles play with a two-set 6-0 win against Eric Lopez-Araujo. Jordan Owens, playing the number four spot, followed with another clean win against Gerald Miller and the point win for the Royals.

Giovanni Setti topped Hazel Vazquez with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the number six spot and Williams topped Bradley Girgorio with a 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Vas and Per-Erik Soler concluded the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 respectively. Vas saw a win against Tarick Miller with a 6-0, 6-0 score. Soler secured the last team point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Sharif Axam.

The men's team will travel to face the 48-ranked Francis Marion University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016.
